The Ultimate Weekend Getaway Guide to Goondiwindi
Have you ever desperately needed to ditch the city rush? I certainly have! Goondiwindi might just be your perfect escape. It is a stunning border town sitting right on the Macintyre River. I visited recently and absolutely fell in love with its warm country charm.
You would think it is just another quiet farming hub. But it feels remarkably different. The streets are bursting with colourful art, historic pubs, and incredibly friendly locals.
This guide gives you everything you need for an unforgettable trip. You will discover exactly where to eat, stay, and play. Read on to plan a spectacular weekend out west!
1. Your Perfect Friday to Sunday Itinerary
Planning a trip can sometimes feel overwhelming. Where do you even start? I put together a simple schedule to help you out!
- Friday Afternoon: Arrive and stretch your legs on the Macintyre River walk. Grab a coldie and a creamy Tuscan chicken at the historic Queensland Hotel.
- Saturday Morning: Book the 8:30 am Goondiwindi Cotton Tour. You will see a massive 2,500-acre working farm in action.
- Saturday Afternoon: Drive out to see the famous Yelarbon Silos. Then head back to wander Goondiwindi’s colourful street art trail.
- Sunday Morning: Enjoy a fantastic breakfast at The Larder. Before driving home, stop for a selfie with the Gunsynd statue.
My top tip: Book your cotton tour well in advance. They fill up incredibly fast during the busy autumn harvest season! Find the best accommodation for your weekend stay.
2. Local Attractions You Can’t Miss
Goondiwindi is packed with brilliant things to see. It is completely full of surprises! Here are my absolute favourite spots.
- Yelarbon Silo Art: You have to see this in person. The mural took gold for Best Rural Art at the 2020 Australian Street Art Awards. It shows a young boy playing at the edge of a lagoon.
- Texas Rabbit Works: This is a fantastic slice of history! In the 1930s, this factory processed 6,000 rabbits a day. It is the last remaining feral rabbit works in Australia.
- Gunsynd the Goondiwindi Grey: You must visit this legendary horse’s statue on the main street. He was voted Australian Horse of the Year in 1972.
- Lake Coolmunda: Love the water? This expansive lake is an amazing spot for fishing and kayaking.
My top tip: Grab an art trail guide from the Visitor Information Centre. It makes finding hidden murals in Bowen Lane so much easier.
3. The Best Dining Spots
Country towns always deliver when it comes to amazing food. Goondiwindi is certainly no exception!
- The Larder: I highly recommend starting your day here. The coffee is genuinely excellent. They also make a delicious roasted vegetable panini for lunch.
- Victoria Hotel: This grand black-and-white pub is an absolute classic. Pull up a stool in the public bar. The recently refurbished bistro serves up brilliant steaks and schnitzels.
- Shot 2 U Coffee Shop: Need a quick caffeine hit? Locals love this spot for its friendly service and homemade slices.
My top tip: If you want a dinner table at the Victoria Hotel on a Saturday night, ring ahead. It gets very busy with hungry locals!
4. Where to Rest Your Head
A good night’s sleep is essential for any country road trip. Fortunately, you have some fantastic options to choose from here.
- The Town House Motor Inn: This is my go-to spot. It is incredibly quiet despite being right in the centre of town. The rooms are spacious, and you can easily walk to the pub.
- 40 on Marshall Boutique Hotel: Travelling with the family? This place offers great family rooms with modern amenities and wonderfully cold air-conditioning.
- Camping: Prefer sleeping under the stars? You can bring your tent to Lake Coolmunda Caravan Park. Waking up to a waterfront sunrise is truly spectacular!
My top tip: Ask for a room away from the main road if you are a light sleeper. The road trains can be a bit noisy late at night.
5. Travel Logistics: Getting There and When to Go
Getting to Goondiwindi is half the fun! The drive is wonderfully scenic.
If you are coming from Brisbane, expect about a four-hour drive via the Cunningham Highway. The roads are mostly straight and very easy to navigate. I love putting on a good podcast and watching the landscape change.
When should you visit? The cooler months are definitely the most comfortable. If you can, aim for March to May. This lines up perfectly with the local cotton harvest season. The sight of fluffy white cotton lining the highways is just magical!
My top tip: Always pack a wide-brimmed hat and plenty of water in the car. The outback sun can be quite fierce, even in winter!
